The Office of Tibet, London

The Office of Tibet in London is an official agency of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Established in 1981, its main function is to create a better understanding of the situation in Tibet and to draw the attention of world public opinion to the plight of the Tibetan people and the functioning of the exiled Tibetan government.

The Office in London represents Tibetan affairs in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Iceland. It supervises arrangements for His Holiness the Dalai Lama's visits to these countries, whilst looking after the welfare of the Tibetans living in these regions.

It serves as a liaison office and source of information on matters relating to Tibetans inside and outside Tibet, including history, culture, religion, environment and all aspects of the Tibetan way of life.

Maintaining direct contact with governments, parliamentarians, non-governmental organisations and human rights groups, the Office of Tibet keeps them informed of recent developments in Tibet. It monitors the current political and social conditions in Chinese-occupied Tibet, and provides up-to-date information on Tibetan refugees to interested parties.

The Office helps to coordinate the exchange of information between individuals and organisations working for the welfare of the Tibetan people. It also analyses media coverage of Tibet and makes this information available to different governments, organisations and interested individuals.

The Office has assisted in the production of various documentaries for television companies, radio stations, newspapers and magazines. Its officials continue to be invited to speak on Tibet and assist in various Tibet -related exhibitions, cultural and other programmes.

The Office of Tibet addresses all aspects of Tibetan refugee life, being the official channel through which funding from individuals and humanitarian agencies is directed to all the Central Tibetan Administration departments and institutions. It ensures that every donation received goes directly to the intended recipient. Through the Office, organisations and individuals have supported many projects, with an emphasis on education, economic and community development, religion and health - as a means of ensuring the preservation of Tibetan identity, culture and religion.
